Summary

Freezing Order, the follow-up to Red Notice, is available now! “[Red Notice] does for investing in Russia and the former Soviet Union what Liar’s Poker did for our understanding of Salomon Brothers, Wall Street, and the mortgage-backed securities business in the 1980s。 Browder’s business saga meshes well with the story of corruption and murder in Vladimir Putin’s Russia, making Red Notice an early candidate for any list of the year’s best books” (Fortune)。

“Part John Grisham-like thriller, part business and political memoir。” —The New York Times

This is a story about an accidental activist。 Bill Browder started out his adult life as the Wall Street maverick whose instincts led him to Russia just after the breakup of the Soviet Union, where he made his fortune。

Along the way he exposed corruption, and when he did, he barely escaped with his life。 His Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky wasn’t so lucky: he ended up in jail, where he was tortured to death。 That changed Browder forever。 He saw the murderous heart of the Putin regime and has spent the last half decade on a campaign to expose it。 Because of that, he became Putin’s number one enemy, especially after Browder succeeded in having a law passed in the United States—The Magnitsky Act—that punishes a list of Russians implicated in the lawyer’s murder。 Putin famously retaliated with a law that bans Americans from adopting Russian orphans。

A financial caper, a crime thriller, and a political crusade, Red Notice is the story of one man taking on overpowering odds to change the world, and also the story of how, without intending to, he found meaning in his life。

Bill Browder’s story, while a few years away from the headlines, remains relevant and compelling。Vladimir Putin is a central character in both this story, and in today’s headlines。The promise of a free market post-Soviet Russia becoming an international economic powerhouse, with wealth earned and shared by many, was a captivating dream。A dream that was not to become reality。Browder’s story helped me to better understand just who the Russian oligarchs are, what their relationship to Putin is, and Bill Browder’s story, while a few years away from the headlines, remains relevant and compelling。Vladimir Putin is a central character in both this story, and in today’s headlines。The promise of a free market post-Soviet Russia becoming an international economic powerhouse, with wealth earned and shared by many, was a captivating dream。A dream that was not to become reality。Browder’s story helped me to better understand just who the Russian oligarchs are, what their relationship to Putin is, and how the Russia of the 1990’s has now become the Russia of the 2020’s。 。。。more

Other than the schmaltzy sections about his second wife and the unnecessary descriptions of how people he meets look, this book definitely kept me intrigued。 While not surprising, the extent of the corruption and brutality in Russia is still mind-blowing。

Read this one straight through。 Enlightening in more ways than I can count。

This book warned us that Putin wil stop at nothing to silence critics。 We need to listen because now this applies to Ukraine。

A political thriller made all the more harrowing since it’s a true story - not to mention the fact that some of these events took place in the last 10 years。 I didn’t want to put this book down from the moment I picked it up。

Not much to say except that make this book the one book you read this year。

I can see no reason not to give this book 5 stars。 It’s an incredibly easy read, complete page turner & fascinating true story。 It is particularly interesting given Russia’s current war with Ukraine。 It has probably gone a long way towards creating the legal framework by which the West is sanctioning Kremlin mobsters as I write this review。 A seriously compelling read & written in such a way that despite being of serious subject matter, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it on the beach。 So much so, m I can see no reason not to give this book 5 stars。 It’s an incredibly easy read, complete page turner & fascinating true story。 It is particularly interesting given Russia’s current war with Ukraine。 It has probably gone a long way towards creating the legal framework by which the West is sanctioning Kremlin mobsters as I write this review。 A seriously compelling read & written in such a way that despite being of serious subject matter, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it on the beach。 So much so, my father & I finished the book on the same day, having fought over who’s turn it is to read it each day! 。。。more

I don't know how to rate this。 Non-fiction can be difficult。 Rate the book, or the story it tells? What I want to make absolutely clear is that the story this book relates should be essential at any time, but certainly now with war raging in Ukraine as Putin's Russia seeks to run amok。 The book is the first hand account of Bill Browder, who made his name as a fund manager going into Russia and buying stakes in all the Russian companies being snapped up by what we now think of as oligarchs。 He jo I don't know how to rate this。 Non-fiction can be difficult。 Rate the book, or the story it tells? What I want to make absolutely clear is that the story this book relates should be essential at any time, but certainly now with war raging in Ukraine as Putin's Russia seeks to run amok。 The book is the first hand account of Bill Browder, who made his name as a fund manager going into Russia and buying stakes in all the Russian companies being snapped up by what we now think of as oligarchs。 He joined them at the beginning, then fought them as they tried to steal his investments。 His success in doing so stopped when Putin became leader, and the men he was challenging put him there。 Browder was forced to leave Russia, and then so were his Russian professional associates。 All except one, his tax lawyer, a man called Sergei Magnitsky, who was arrested, imprisoned, denied medical treatment and eventually died in horrible circumstances。 Browder then lead a campaign which means that today many countries, including the US, UK and the EU have Acts in his name allowing sanctions to be placed on Russian individuals who commit crimes。 This is the story, and it will linger longer in my mind than many books of fiction。 Browder isn't a writer but he's good enough to make keep reading。 The telling is better than functional, but can fail to be as good as it perhaps wants to be。 This is most noticeable early on, trying to explain complex financial reasoning with technical language, and also managing to be self-aggrandising when I think the aim was to be self-depecrating。 But I can forgive that easily。 He now lives in fear of his own life, pursued by the Russian state in the courts and probably on the streets as well。 As he says "I have no intention of letting them kill me。 I can't mention most of the counter-measures I take but I will mention one; this book。 If I am killed you will know who did it。" 。。。more

"Red Notice: A True Story of High Finance, Murder and One Man's Fight for Justice" by Bill Browder is not normally a book I would pick up and read, but as I watched the horrific pictures of Putin's war on Ukraine I wanted to know more about this leader and his country from someone who's been there and dealt with his corruption and barbaric policies firsthand。 Mr。 Browder tells a harrowing tale of survival, revenge and consequences。 Bill Browder is an American financier whose found his niche in t "Red Notice: A True Story of High Finance, Murder and One Man's Fight for Justice" by Bill Browder is not normally a book I would pick up and read, but as I watched the horrific pictures of Putin's war on Ukraine I wanted to know more about this leader and his country from someone who's been there and dealt with his corruption and barbaric policies firsthand。 Mr。 Browder tells a harrowing tale of survival, revenge and consequences。 Bill Browder is an American financier whose found his niche in the world of finance in Russia right after the fall of communism when money was easily made, and the nation was just starting to turn to more of a capitalist society。 His business was a huge success and Browder was top in his field when one day in the early 2007 his office was raided by corrupt agents who stole millions and millions of dollars that his company had paid in taxes。 The oligarchs who stole this money never expected Mr。 Browder to fight so hard to get his money back and expose their corruption, but that's exactly what he did。 He went up against them and for that he will lose his business, his home in Russia, his visa to ever get back into Russia and possibly his life。 But it's not until they arrest and torture to death one of his attorney's that he really gets tough and goes after these corrupt govt。 officials and oligarchs that he learns just how high up in the govt。 this corruption originates from。 He's soon Putin's number one enemy。 Working out of his home office now in London he dismantles the scheme to commit fraud and steal millions and millions from the people of Russia。I know nothing about investment banking, stocks or financial dealings on the world stage, but Browder does a great job of breaking down all the specifics into everyday language even someone like me can understand。 I found it hard to put this one down, it's very fast paced and reading all he went through to finally get justice was incredible。 I found it fascinating following his story as he went from the top of his chosen profession to back in the States working with humanitarian groups and helping others affected by corporate or State corruption。 It's just one hell of a story! It's also a brief look into the mind of the mind of one of the world's most vicious rulers, Putin! Happy Reading! 。。。more

Great read。 Makes you understand Russian culture and who Putin really is。 Recommended read。 Based on facts and yet reads like a novel。 Makes you understand Russian culture and who Putin really is。

The latter half of the book was truly scary。 The first half would make you feel like you’re reading about yet another opportunistic capitalist who made his millions on the back of inexperienced people in an emerging market albeit Russia。 Worth the read。

Fascinating story about corruption in Russia and the lengths that the Russian government was willing to go to to take down a foreigner for being successful in their country。 I had heard about these types of activities, but always chalked it up to exaggerations based on stereotypes or old experiences。 Unfortunately, it sounds like it hasn’t gotten much better and continues to present day with Putin’s treatment of opposition candidates and political protesters。 I also enjoyed the insight into Amer Fascinating story about corruption in Russia and the lengths that the Russian government was willing to go to to take down a foreigner for being successful in their country。 I had heard about these types of activities, but always chalked it up to exaggerations based on stereotypes or old experiences。 Unfortunately, it sounds like it hasn’t gotten much better and continues to present day with Putin’s treatment of opposition candidates and political protesters。 I also enjoyed the insight into American foreign policy for Russia around the 2010s and the political process for how to get a law enacted through congress。 。。。more

I found the story told through this book and the storytelling very compelling。 I found Browder's experience very interesting, including both his own personal experience as well as that of his family and associates which are recounted through this book。 As someone who is interested in finance and business more broadly I appreciated the willingness of Browder to discuss the path that led to his role as well as the choices made and the thought process behind those choices。 Moreover, as a general be I found the story told through this book and the storytelling very compelling。 I found Browder's experience very interesting, including both his own personal experience as well as that of his family and associates which are recounted through this book。 As someone who is interested in finance and business more broadly I appreciated the willingness of Browder to discuss the path that led to his role as well as the choices made and the thought process behind those choices。 Moreover, as a general believer in efficient markets I was awe-struck by the opportunities identified by the author and persistence of these opportunities over time。 My main concern with this book was that the shift in tone from light to heavy seemed very abrupt。 Perhaps this is how it happened in the life of the author but given the additional time for retrospection this transition could have been foreshadowed to a greater extent。 Overall, this book provide an easy to read and engrossing avenue to learn a lot about business in developing countries sharply highlighting both the positives and negatives punctuated by the immense stakes。 。。。more

3。75 starThe grandson of the most notable communist in America sets his aspirations to become the biggest capitalist in Russia。 Despite knowing nothing about how the country operates, he embarks on a thrilling journey filled with twists, turns and even murder!

READ THIS BOOKIf you want understanding of how Putin got to be president and how he works read this。 Some bits you can skip but it is massively readable and extremely unsettling。

nothing has changed with PutinThis is an extraordinary book revealing the depth and width of the Magnitsky affair。 It’s truly horrifying to learn of Russia and Putin’s disregard for human life and willingness to go after those who expose information about Russian tactics and actions。 The worst part, to me, is that what is going on with Ukraine right now is exactly what they have always done - kill, lie, threaten anyone and anything that disagrees with their reality。

Terrific book! Bill Browder found out that there was a price to pay for investing in Russia and making money。 I thought I may lose interest in the book once his lawyer in Russia gets killed but surprise the book just kept getting better and better。 My take away is never invest in Russia!!

Ultimately this book shows how corrupt and evil the Russian govt has been & continues to be。 Interesting read, and one I’d recommend given current events。

This is the fascinating true story of Bill Browder and how the Magnitsky Act came into being。 It’s very compelling and reads like a spy novel。

Gripping, and shocking。 Sometimes narration was obnoxious, but this was minor in contrast to the power of the recount。

4。5/5。 Unbelievable story and incredibly relevant with Putin & the Russian oligarchy currently under the world microscope。 The reader should be able to look past Browder's ego and appreciate his accomplishments -- becoming a self-made multi-millionaire who successfully launched an international campaign against Russian corruption。 4。5/5。 Unbelievable story and incredibly relevant with Putin & the Russian oligarchy currently under the world microscope。 The reader should be able to look past Browder's ego and appreciate his accomplishments -- becoming a self-made multi-millionaire who successfully launched an international campaign against Russian corruption。 。。。more

This is a gripping, compelling book, not only because it is true and heartbreaking, but told first-person by the first American who tried to do business in Russia after the fall of the USSR, but who was also caught in Russia's (and Putin's) corrupt business dealings。Highly recommended。 This is a gripping, compelling book, not only because it is true and heartbreaking, but told first-person by the first American who tried to do business in Russia after the fall of the USSR, but who was also caught in Russia's (and Putin's) corrupt business dealings。Highly recommended。 。。。more
